Things My Couch and I Have Discussed

My couch and I have a relationship that has outlasted some friendships, and frankly the couch knows me better. We have logged a lot of hours together, the couch and I, and over those hours certain topics keep coming up.

My Day

The Couch

Some afternoons you come to me as a choice, a staged and dignified rest with the good blanket and the low lamp. Other afternoons you come to me as a collapse, just dropping into me because there was nowhere else to land. I receive both the same way and never ask which one this is. I appreciate that you do not make me explain.

We have discussed the people who do not understand us. The friend who says "but you're always lying down," not unkindly, just without knowing. The couch and I exchange a look about this, or we would, if the couch had eyes. It has seen the days behind the lying down. It knows the lying down is not the easy thing it appears to be. The couch is the only witness who has watched every version of my day and judged none of them.

Not bad, for furniture.
